Using Stokes Vector Mode for BLU Display Polarization Recycling in ASAP 2009 V1R1 (Demo Movie)
A small section of a backlight is explored to see the effect of polarization recycling on its performance. It uses diffuse surfaces to couple light out of the backlight top surface, and to re-inject light that escapes the bottom. A hybrid polarizer above the top surface polarizes light that exits the system, while it recycles the complementary polarization to avoid excess losses when integrated into liquid crystal display systems. A uni-directional depolarizer is used to separate the diffuse processes from highly polarized processes. The exiting irradiance and the output polarization through a crossed analyzer are examined.
